Calla Lilies Info
General Info
Native to tropical Africa, Calla Lilies are sleek and elegant with pliable stems that are easily curved into graceful silhouettes. Colors include white, yellow, pink, lavender, rose, orange and green. In early Rome, calla lilies were planted for the winter solstice as a way to brighten homes during the darkest days of the year. White calla lilies are popular in floral wedding arrangements but make great gifts for any situation. One should be very careful when in possession of Calla lilies, for they are toxic and should not be kept where children or animals can come into contact with them. The entire flower is poisonous, but the most dangerous parts are the roots. Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. When ingested, the oxalic acid in the plant causes burning and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and throat. If the acid gets in your eyes, it can cause pain and swelling.
