General Info

Named after Proteus, a Greek sea god with the power of prophecy, what appear to be showy flower petals are often flashy bracts of leaves surrounding a small, but nectar-rich flower. The long-lasting nature of cut protea flowers makes them popular in restaurant and hotel flower arrangements. These durable flowers will often bloom for several months. Commercially available protea feature dozens of spidery petals stem from the flower’s base like a pincushion. The protea flower is native to South Africa. The flowers are not fragrant.

Care and Handling

• Make a fresh cut on the end of the stem to promote water uptake, and remove lower leaves that lie beneath the water’s surface.
• Leaf blackening is due in part to low light therefore, keep them in well-lit situation. The sugar in some flower foods can sometimes prevent leaf blackening. Average Lifespan
